Possessive pronouns vs possessive determiners

Possessive pronouns vs possessive determiners

If my understanding is correct, the genitive/possessive personal pronouns
(mine, yours, his, hers...) are used in place of nouns, and the possessive
determiners (my, your, his, her...) are used as adjectives.
If this is the case, then why is (1) correct, as opposed to (2)?
(1) Whose book is this? It is mine.
(2) *Whose book is this? It is my.
